Kudremukha
Mountain Mountain range in Karnataka, biodiverse rainforest and peaks
Kudremukha in Karnataka is a rainforest‑clad peak and protected park popular with trekkers during the monsoon; expect grassy slopes, forest trails and basic trekking infrastructure.
How to Get to Kudremukha #
Kudremukha sits in the Western Ghats of Karnataka and is commonly reached by road. By car it is about 95-100 km from Mangaluru (Mangalore) - roughly a 2-3 hour drive - and about 320 km from Bengaluru (6-7 hours). The nearest regular bus and rail hubs are Mangaluru and the towns in Chikkamagaluru district; state-run KSRTC and private buses run toward Kalasa/Karkala and the Chikkamagaluru area, from which you take a local road up toward the Kudremukha National Park gate.
The final approach to the peak requires a trek from the park/entry gate (several kilometres on marked trails). Expect to park or be dropped at the park access road and proceed on foot; check local park access rules and guided-trek options before travelling.
Tips for Visiting Kudremukha #
- Start pre-dawn and aim to be on the ridge by mid-morning - early starts give the clearest views before clouds build over the Western Ghats and before day-trippers arrive.
- Avoid the monsoon season (roughly June-September) when trails are slippery and park access is often restricted; the clearest hiking conditions are typically in the post-monsoon and winter months.
- Many visitors focus only on the summit; don't miss the surrounding grassland plateaus, streams and small viewpoints along the ridge that offer quieter panoramas and birdwatching opportunities.
- To avoid crowds, plan a weekday visit and check current access with the Karnataka Forest Department or local rangers, since entry rules and trail availability change seasonally.
Best Time to Visit Kudremukha #
Visit Kudremukha in the post-monsoon and winter months (October-February) for the most reliable trekking conditions and clear views.
