Kroměříž Castle
Palace Baroque castle with formal gardens and art collections
Kroměříž Castle in the Czech Republic centers on the Archbishop’s Baroque palace and its formal Flower and Castle Gardens; visitors tour period interiors, the picture gallery and the landscaped grounds recognized for their historic layout.
Kroměříž Castle is an historic episcopal palace and garden complex in the town of Kroměříž in the Zlín Region of the Czech Republic, recognized for its Baroque architecture and formal gardens. The site is significant both for its preserved palace interiors and its 17th- and 18th-century gardens.
The palace houses show rooms, period decoration and gallery spaces, while the adjoining formal Flower Garden and more informal Pleasure Garden together cover extensive cultivated grounds with avenues, fountains and sculptural ensembles. Visitors can see ornamental parterres, axial layouts and garden architecture that illustrate Baroque and later landscape design.
Originally the residence of Moravian bishops and later archbishops, the palace was rebuilt and redecorated in Baroque style across the 17th and 18th centuries after earlier medieval structures. The gardens were laid out in the late 17th century and reworked in subsequent centuries to their current historic appearance; conservation and restoration work has taken place to preserve interiors and garden features.
The complex sits in the small city of Kroměříž, about 70-80 kilometers east of Brno and within the Moravian lowlands, surrounded by town development on one side and cultivated plains on the other. It is accessed from the town center and is a short walk from local transport links.
- UNESCO designation: Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Kroměříž Castle and Gardens ensemble, combining the palace interiors and historic gardens.
- Access notes: The complex provides wheelchair-accessible areas in parts of the palace and garden paths, but some historic rooms and terraces have restricted access for conservation reasons.
