Kremsmünster Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in Upper Austria founded in AD 777. It has remained an active religious, cultural and educational centre for more than a millennium.

Visitors can see the abbey church with its Baroque decoration, an extensive historic library, a museum and the abbey’s observatory. The complex combines religious architecture with collections of art, liturgical silver and scientific instruments.

Founded by Bavarian dukes in the late 8th century, the abbey developed over centuries and underwent major Baroque rebuilding in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its library, school and observatory reflect a long tradition of monastic scholarship.

Kremsmünster Abbey is in the town of Kremsmünster in Upper Austria. By car it is approximately 25 km (around 25-30 minutes) south of Linz and a short drive from nearby Wels; the abbey sits within easy walking distance (a few minutes) of the town centre. Regional buses and local train services connect Kremsmünster with Linz and surrounding towns - from the town centre it’s a very short walk to the abbey.
