Kremsmünster Abbey

Kremsmünster Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in Upper Austria founded in AD 777. It has remained an active religious, cultural and educational centre for more than a millennium.

Visitors can see the abbey church with its Baroque decoration, an extensive historic library, a museum and the abbey’s observatory. The complex combines religious architecture with collections of art, liturgical silver and scientific instruments.

Founded by Bavarian dukes in the late 8th century, the abbey developed over centuries and underwent major Baroque rebuilding in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its library, school and observatory reflect a long tradition of monastic scholarship.

Situated in the town of Kremsmünster in Upper Austria, the abbey lies on the valley of the Krems river and is a prominent local landmark visible from the surrounding countryside.
