The lake’s elongated form follows a glacial valley and it is bordered by roads and small settlements; its shoreline and adjacent countryside are popular for day trips and outdoor activities. A preserved heritage railway, the Krøderbanen, runs along parts of the lake’s shore and brings visitors on occasional services.
Krøderen lies within the municipality traditionally known as Krødsherad in the former Buskerud area, inland from Drammen and within easy driving distance of the Oslo region. It is set in a rural, forested part of southern Norway.
