The Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, often called the Polish Jura, is a limestone plateau in southern Poland stretching between the cities of Kraków and Częstochowa. It is characterised by karst topography including cliffs, caves, valleys and isolated rock formations.

The area contains a series of medieval hilltop castles and watchpoints known collectively as the Eagles’ Nests, many established in the 14th century as part of regional defence. Trails, climbing routes and scenic viewpoints across limestone ridges draw walkers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Parts of the upland are protected in reserves and parks, including Ojców National Park, and the region sits north of Kraków within Poland’s southern upland landscapes.

What to See#

• Ojców National Park: Ojców National Park is a compact protected area inside the upland noted for limestone cliffs, forested valleys and karst caves; it is the smallest national park in Poland and a popular day-visit destination.
• Eagles’ Nests Trail: The Eagles’ Nests (Szlak Orlich Gniazd) are a chain of medieval hilltop castles and fortifications sited on limestone escarpments between Kraków and Częstochowa, many dating to the 14th century.

The Kraków-Częstochowa Upland (Jura Krakowsko‑Częstochowska) is a broad limestone region between Kraków and Częstochowa. It’s most easily reached by car from either city (driving times vary by exact destination within the upland but are typically around 40-90 minutes). From Kraków, regional trains and buses serve towns on the upland (for example Olkusz or Zawiercie); from those towns local roads and buses connect to specific sites, castles and trails. Many visitors use Kraków or Częstochowa as a base and drive to particular parks, castles or climbing areas.

• Start early at major trailheads such as Pieskowa Skała or Ojców to beat coach‑tour crowds and have popular castle sites on the Eagles' Nests trail to yourself in the morning.
• Explore lesser‑visited walking routes and side ravines away from the main castles-many visitors stick to the famous castles, so smaller limestone karst features, cliffs and caves on secondary trails tend to be quieter and rewarding, especially in spring or early autumn.
