Kraków Cloth Hall
Building Renaissance-era market hall in Kraków's main square
Renaissance market hall on Kraków’s Main Market Square, known for arcades and souvenir stalls. Visitors come for the Sukiennice gallery of 19th‑century Polish painting, architecture, and proximity to St. Mary’s Basilica and Rynek cafés.
The Kraków Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) is a historic Renaissance and medieval trading hall occupying the centre of Kraków’s Main Market Square. The present arcade-dominated form dates largely to a post-fire Renaissance rebuilding in the 16th century.
The ground-floor arcade has long housed market stalls selling crafts, textiles and souvenirs, while the upper floor contains a branch of the National Museum with a permanent art collection of 19th-century Polish painting and sculpture. The building’s long, rectangular footprint and open arcades make it a focal point of the city’s market square and a regular stop on walking tours.
Originally constructed in the medieval period as a center for long-distance trade in textiles and cloth, the hall has retained its commercial role through successive reconstructions and renovations. Major rebuilding after a destructive fire in the 16th century gave it the Renaissance loggia and attics visible today.
Sitting centrally in Kraków’s Old Town, the Cloth Hall is directly on Rynek Główny and is surrounded by other major landmarks including St. Mary’s Basilica and the Town Hall Tower.
- Location: Central position on Kraków's medieval Market Square (Rynek Główny) makes it one of the easiest landmarks to reach on foot from most central hotels and tram stops.
- Visiting tip: Mornings and late afternoons are typically less crowded on the ground-floor arcade stalls; the upstairs museum has timed entry during busy seasons.
What to See #
- Sukiennice Museum (upper floor): Located on the upper floor and housing a permanent collection of 19th-century Polish painting and sculpture, arranged as a branch of the National Museum since the late 19th century.

Kraków Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) sits in Rynek Główny, Kraków’s historic Main Market Square. It’s in the city centre and is an easy walk of about 15-20 minutes (roughly 1 km) east from Kraków Główny railway station; alternatively take a short taxi or tram ride to the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) stop.
Tips for Visiting Kraków Cloth Hall #
- Visit at first light on weekdays to photograph the Cloth Hall and the empty Rynek before tour groups arrive; the Hall's exterior and the surrounding square are far calmer in the early morning than midday.
- Go upstairs to the Sukiennice (Cloth Hall) gallery - many visitors only browse the ground-floor stalls and miss the 19th-century Polish art collection and the upstairs museum rooms.
- Buy museum or special exhibition tickets in advance on busy summer days and during holidays to avoid long queues at the ticket desk inside the Hall.
Best Time to Visit Kraków Cloth Hall #
Visit in late spring or early summer for mild weather and lively outdoor markets, or in winter for fewer crowds inside the covered Cloth Hall.
