Krak des Chevaliers is a Crusader castle in western Syria, widely regarded as one of the best-preserved examples of medieval military architecture. The fortress was developed and extensively fortified by the Knights Hospitaller from the 12th century and became a major Hospitaller stronghold.
The site comprises multiple concentric curtain walls, towers, vaulted service rooms and a heavily defended inner ward with a chapel and cisterns, designed to support long sieges and garrison life. Its massive defensive works and clear plan make it a key study site for Crusader-era fortifications.
Historically the castle was held and expanded by the Knights Hospitaller from the 12th century and later fell to Muslim forces in the 13th century during Mamluk campaigns. It has been the subject of archaeological study and conservation efforts and stands as a major medieval monument in the region.
