How to Get to Koumac

Koumac is a small town in New Caledonia's North Province; most international visitors arrive via Nouméa. Use La Tontouta (NOU) for international flights and Nouméa Magenta (GEA) for domestic connections, then continue by car or scheduled shuttle north to Koumac.

By Air

La Tontouta International Airport (NOU): The island’s main international gateway, about 50-60 minutes’ drive from Nouméa. Regular taxis to Nouméa cost roughly 8,000-12,000 XPF and take 50-60 minutes; the shared airport shuttle (navette) runs to Nouméa and central hotels for around 1,600-2,000 XPF and takes about 60-75 minutes depending on stops.

Nouméa Magenta (GEA): A small domestic/seaplane airport in Nouméa used for local and inter-island services. Taxis into central Nouméa take 10-15 minutes and cost roughly 1,500-2,500 XPF; car hire desks are available at or near Magenta for onward travel across Grande Terre.

By Train & Bus

Train: There are no long-distance rail links on Grande Terre; rail travel is limited to tourist railways elsewhere in New Caledonia and not relevant for Koumac.

Bus: Intercity bus services between Nouméa and northern towns are limited and infrequent. Most travellers use rental cars (recommended) or booked shuttle services for the roughly 4-6 hour drive north to Koumac depending on stops; local bus fares and timetables vary and should be checked locally in Nouméa before travel.
