National Park Canadian coastal national park with dunes and wildlife
Kouchibouguac National Park on New Brunswick’s east coast protects barrier beaches, tidal lagoons and extensive cycling trails; visitors camp, swim and watch seals and migratory shorebirds.
Kouchibouguac National Park is a coastal national park on the eastern shore of New Brunswick that protects barrier beaches, sand dunes, salt marshes and shallow bays along the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The park is known for long sandy beaches and accessible coastal recreation.
Visitors use the park for beach activities, birdwatching, cycling on paved and gravel trails, and interpretive programs at the visitor centre. The landscape combines open shoreline systems with sheltered interior lagoons and tidal flats.
The protected area was created in the late 1960s to conserve a contiguous stretch of coastal wilderness and has since been managed for both conservation and public access, with infrastructure for low-impact recreation.
Kouchibouguac National Park lies on New Brunswick’s north Atlantic coast, encompassing mainland and barrier island habitats near the local community bearing the same name and within the Gulf of St. Lawrence coastal zone.
- Beaches and trails: The park's shoreline includes extensive boardwalks, designated picnic and camping areas, and a network of family-friendly cycling trails that run through dunes and salt marshes.

Tips for Visiting Kouchibouguac National Park #
- Visit in late summer (July-September) for warmer beach water and far fewer black flies than in early summer; mornings and late afternoons are generally more pleasant for outdoor activities.
- Start at the park's visitor centre to pick up tide and trail information-many activities (kayaking, intertidal beach exploration) are tide-dependent and the centre can advise safe access points.
- Explore lesser-used access roads to the park's barrier beaches and saltmarshes rather than the main beach carparks; these quieter entrances give better chances to see shorebirds and coastal landscapes without the day‑tripper crowds.
