Kotohira-gū (commonly called Kompira-san) is a Shinto shrine complex in the town of Kotohira, Kagawa Prefecture on Shikoku. The shrine is a long-standing site of pilgrimage associated with maritime safety.

Access to the upper parts of the complex requires an extended climb up a long stone stairway from the town to the main shrine buildings on Mount Zōzu, with viewpoints and intermediate halls along the route. The complex includes multiple worship halls and subsidiary shrines rather than a single isolated building.

The town adjacent to the shrine preserves cultural features related to pilgrimage, including the historic Kanamaru-za kabuki theatre, which is one of Japan’s older surviving playhouses and is preserved as a cultural attraction.

The shrine developed over many centuries as a regional pilgrimage destination for seafarers and local communities; the present complex reflects additions and rebuilding carried out over time.

Located in the town of Kotohira in Kagawa Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, the shrine sits on the slopes of Mount Zōzu above the town’s commercial approach.

  • Dedication: Dedicated to maritime safety and seafaring deities; historically important as a place of pilgrimage on Shikoku.

How to Get to Kotohira-gū #

From JR Shikoku Kotohira Station (Dosan Line) or the nearby Kotoden Kotohira Station, walk about 10-15 minutes to the stairway entrance. The town is 1 hour by local train from Takamatsu; highway buses also run from Takamatsu Bus Terminal to Kotohira (approx. 50-70 minutes). The climb begins at the base near the town’s main street; leave extra time for the steps and shrine buildings.

Tips for Visiting Kotohira-gū #

  • Start the climb from the main approach at Kotohira Station-early morning avoids the tour buses and the humidity that collects on the stone steps by late afternoon.
  • Count the steps if one likes rituals: the first shrine sits at 785 steps; keep going to the inner sanctuary at roughly 1,368 steps.
  • Wear clothing that respects shrine etiquette (shoulders and knees covered) if entering inner shrine buildings; many visitors leave offerings at the wooden donation boxes along the ascent.
  • Look for the shallow grooves worn into the edges of several steps-the work of centuries of priests, pilgrims, and geta.
