Kotlin Island

Kotlin Island lies in the Gulf of Finland and is the site of the fortified port city of Kronstadt, historically and functionally linked to Saint Petersburg. It has been a strategic naval base and seafaring centre since the early 18th century.

The island contains a compact town plan with historic naval fortifications, piers and maritime infrastructure that attract visitors interested in naval history and architecture. Maritime monuments and a cathedral associated with the naval community are among the visible features.

Kotlin and Kronstadt were developed under Peter the Great as part of the establishment of a secure Baltic port and naval base in the early 1700s. The island’s fortifications and docks were expanded through the 18th and 19th centuries as Saint Petersburg grew as an imperial capital.

The island sits in the eastern Gulf of Finland, roughly west of central Saint Petersburg, at the approaches to the Neva Bay. It forms part of the maritime gateway to the city and is reached via the dam and road links that cross the bay.
