Kossuth Square

Kossuth Square is a major public square in central Budapest directly in front of the Hungarian Parliament building and named for the 19th-century statesman Lajos Kossuth. It functions as a focal point for official events and public assemblies.

The square is dominated by the neo-Gothic façade of the Parliament and contains several monuments and memorials to historical figures associated with Hungarian statehood. Its position on the Pest bank of the Danube places it adjacent to riverside promenades and transport links.

Named for Lajos Kossuth, the square has evolved as the ceremonial forecourt to Hungary’s national legislature and has been the scene of political rallies and state ceremonies since the modern parliament building was established.

It lies on the Pest side of central Budapest beside the River Danube, immediately outside the main entrance of the Hungarian Parliament building.

• Best viewpoint: Face-on views of the Parliament from across the Danube, particularly from Buda heights such as Fisherman's Bastion, are among the most photographed perspectives of the square.
• Ceremonial site: The square is frequently used for official ceremonies and public gatherings, given its location in front of Hungary's seat of government.
