Kosrae

Kosrae is the easternmost state of the Federated States of Micronesia, a single main island with steep interior terrain, rainforest and extensive fringing coral reefs. It is known for strong local culture, intact forest cover in upland areas and productive nearshore reefs.

Key attractions include well-preserved archaeological sites made from coral and stone, dense coastal reef systems for diving, and upland rainforest that supports endemic plants and birdlife. The island’s shoreline and reef flats are popular for snorkeling and diving, while inland trails lead to viewpoints and waterfalls.

Kosrae was part of wider Pacific colonial histories and administration shifts in the late 19th and 20th centuries and is today one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia. Local government and communities maintain cultural sites and conservation areas.

Located in the central-west Pacific within the Caroline Islands, Kosrae is remote from large continental landmasses and is served by an international airport with regional flights connecting to other islands and hubs in Micronesia.

• Lelu ruins: An archaeological complex of pre-colonial stone and coral-built structures on Lelu Island and adjacent shoreline, notable as a principal historical site on the island.
• Utwe-Walung conservation area: A marine and terrestrial conservation area that protects mangroves, reef systems and upland forest patches and supports local fisheries and biodiversity values.
