Korvatunturi
Mountain Remote Lapland fell traditionally associated with Santa Claus
A remote fell in Finnish Lapland near the Russian border associated with Santa Claus lore; hikers make long, wilderness treks and visit for Arctic solitude and folklore.
Korvatunturi is a remote fell in Finnish Lapland on the Finland-Russia border, notable in Finnish folklore as the traditional home of Joulupukki. The summit area reaches roughly 486 metres above sea level.
The site is prized for its solitude and landscape rather than built attractions. Trails and winter routes lead across tundra and fell terrain to the summit area; there are no large visitor facilities at the top, so trips are typically day hikes or multi-day wilderness excursions.
In Finnish cultural tradition Korvatunturi has long been associated with Santa Claus and Christmas folklore; the name and the story are part of modern Finnish popular culture. The fell has no long history of permanent settlement and has remained primarily a wilderness landmark.
Geographically it sits in eastern Lapland near the municipal area of Savukoski on the border with Russia, surrounded by fell and boreal forest landscapes.
- Folklore: Known in Finnish folklore as the home of Joulupukki (the Finnish Santa Claus); the name means "Ear Fell" because its twin summits are said to resemble an ear shape.
Tips for Visiting Korvatunturi #
- Korvatunturi sits on Finland's border with Russia and lies in a remote, border‑zone area with no regular tourist infrastructure - you cannot just drive up to it from the Finnish side.
- If you intend to reach the fell, arrange permission via the Finnish Border Guard and travel with an experienced local guide familiar with border regulations; otherwise visit official Santa attractions in Rovaniemi for a practical alternative.
- Plan visits in the short summer season for continuous daylight and easier access; outside that window weather and snow make any approach far more demanding.
Best Time to Visit Korvatunturi #
Choose winter for snow activities and aurora viewing or midsummer for mild weather and the midnight sun; both seasons have distinct advantages.
