Korup National Park National Park

Korup National Park is a protected rainforest park in Southwest Cameroon established to conserve one of West Africa’s most intact lowland rainforests. It is recognised for high biodiversity, including numerous plant species and significant primate populations.

The park comprises primary lowland and submontane forest with a complex river and stream network, providing habitats for mammals, birds, amphibians, and a rich understory flora. Scientific research and biodiversity monitoring are important activities in the park.

Korup was established to protect this remnant lowland forest from logging and agricultural encroachment and has been the focus of biodiversity research and conservation partnerships. Park management emphasises habitat protection, research, and regulated visitor access.

Korup National Park lies in Cameroon’s Southwest Region near the border with Nigeria, within a lowland rainforest zone; the surrounding landscape is tropical forest and small rural settlements, with the nearest regional towns reached by road.

• Biodiversity: Best known for intact lowland rainforest and high biodiversity, including populations of primates such as chimpanzees and drills; guided walks and research visits are the usual ways to see wildlife.
• Access: The park is remote with basic visitor facilities; travel typically involves road travel from regional towns and arrangements with park authorities or tour operators.

Korup is reached from the regional hub of Kumba or from Douala by road. From Kumba, hire 4x4 transport north-west toward Mundemba; from Mundemba, small boats and guided walks provide access into core areas. Travel is remote and requires local arrangements through lodges or conservation groups.

• Hire a local guide with experience in rainforest trekking - trails can be muddy and wildlife sightings are elusive without help.
• Vaccinations and anti-malarial precautions are recommended; bring insect-proof clothing for dawn and dusk.
• Plan for basic field conditions: lodging is minimal and transport within the park often requires 4x4 vehicles or chartered bush taxis.
