City City in Xinjiang known for its natural resources
In Xinjiang’s orchards and oilfields, Korla draws visitors for its fragrant pears, weekend bazaars and as a gateway to Tianshan foothills and desert edges - stops for caravan history, Uyghur teahouses and long-distance bus links.
Why Visit Korla? #
Korla sits at the edge of the Tarim Basin and is famous for Korla fragrant pears and a lively market life where Uyghur stalls sell dried fruits and handwoven carpets. Bosten Lake offers boating and birdwatching, while excursions toward the Taklamakan dunes reveal desert caravan routes and oasis towns. Expect Xinjiang-style lamb kebabs, hand-pulled noodles and folk music in teahouses, making Korla a gateway to both agricultural richness and desert scenery.
Who's Korla For?
Korla’s bazaars and Uyghur restaurants serve standout regional dishes - roast lamb, hand-pulled noodles and the famous Korla fragrant pears. Street stalls and market kebabs are highlights for flavour hunters.
Korla is a springboard for desert adventures into the Taklamakan, dune buggy trips and camel treks; excursions to nearby desert landscapes are easy to arrange with local operators.
Bosten Lake (Bositeng Hu) and the Kaidu River offer birdwatching, water recreation and scenic lakeside drives. The contrast between lake, river and desert makes for varied natural day trips.

Korla Airport (KRL): Korla Airport (库尔勒机场, KRL) is the closest airport to the city and handles domestic flights to Urumqi and other Xinjiang cities. From the airport you can take an airport shuttle bus into town (typically around CNY 8-12, about 25-35 minutes depending on traffic) or a taxi (roughly CNY 40-60, 20-30 minutes).

Flights between Ürümqi and Korla typically range from around CNY 300-800 depending on season and booking time.
Train: Korla Railway Station (库尔勒站) is on the Southern Xinjiang rail corridor and handles conventional long-distance services to Ürümqi and destinations further west. Trains to/from Ürümqi are a common choice; conventional services vary (overnight sleepers and hard/soft seats), with travel times typically several hours and fares ranging widely by class - expect lower-end fares for hard seats and higher fares for soft sleepers. Check China Railway (12306) for current schedules and exact fares.

How to Get Around Korla
Korla is most easily navigated by taxi or DiDi for convenience, with cheap city buses serving routine local trips. For intercity travel use coaches or conventional trains; flights to/from Ürümqi are the fastest option when time is limited.
- Taxi (10-60 CNY) - Metered taxis are the most convenient way to get around Korla for door-to-door trips; drivers rarely speak English. Short trips across town typically cost CNY 10-30, while trips to/from the airport or longer cross-city rides are CNY 30-60 depending on distance and traffic. Always ask the driver to use the meter or agree a price in advance.
- DiDi (ride-hailing) (10-60 CNY) - DiDi operates in Xinjiang and is a reliable alternative to street-hailing; the app supports Chinese and some English interfaces. Prices are comparable to taxis but can be cheaper during off-peak times; it's useful when taxi availability is low or you prefer cashless payment. Have your pickup and drop-off written in Chinese to avoid miscommunication with drivers.
- City Bus (1-2 CNY) - Korla's city buses are very cheap and cover most urban areas; fares are typically around CNY 1-2 per trip. Buses are slow but useful for short, inexpensive journeys; signs and announcements are mainly in Chinese, so prepare route numbers ahead of time. Keep small change or a local transport card for convenience.
- Long-distance coach & train (80-300 CNY) - For travel around Xinjiang, coaches and conventional trains are the practical options. Coaches from Korla to Ürümqi and other regional centres take roughly 6-9 hours and cost around CNY 80-150; conventional train services vary by class - hard-seat and sleeper options are available and fares depend on distance and berth type. Book intercity tickets through official platforms (12306 for trains) or at ticket offices, especially during holiday periods.
- Bicycle / E-bike rental (10-40 CNY/day) - Renting a bicycle or an electric bike is a popular way to cover short distances and explore riverside promenades or the city centre. Daily rental rates are modest (often CNY 10-40 per day) and local shops will provide a helmet and basic instructions. Be cautious on main roads - traffic can be fast and drivers occasionally impatient.
- Walking - Korla's central districts are compact enough for walking between many attractions, shops and restaurants. Pavements can vary in quality and signage is mostly in Chinese, so bring a map or use an offline map app. Walking is the best way to get a feel for local life and discover smaller neighbourhoods.
