About Korgalzhyn (lake)#
Korgalzhyn is a lake and wetland complex in Akmola Region of Kazakhstan, forming part of the Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve. The area is an internationally important stopover and breeding site for migratory waterbirds.
The site attracts birdwatchers for large concentrations of waterfowl and waders, including flocks of greater flamingo in favourable seasons. The lake and surrounding steppe wetlands are saline to brackish and support characteristic wetland vegetation and bird colonies.
The lake has been managed as part of the Korgalzhyn Nature Reserve and was included within the UNESCO World Heritage listing “Saryarka - Steppe and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan” in 2008 because of its importance for migratory birds.
Situated in Akmola Region in north-central Kazakhstan, the lake sits within a steppe landscape of shallow saline basins and marshes that form an international flyway stopover.
