Kōraku-en is a historic Japanese strolling garden in Okayama Prefecture, designated as one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens. It was developed in the early 18th century as a feudal lord’s garden and retains the design principles of the Edo period.
The garden covers roughly a dozen hectares and features a large central pond, winding paths, open lawns and several tea houses and pavilions placed to present seasonal views. Its layout emphasizes borrowed scenery and easy walking circuits.
Designed and developed under the patronage of the Ikeda feudal lords in the early 1700s, the garden has been preserved and opened to the public as an exemplar of classical Japanese landscape gardening. It continues to be managed for public access and seasonal display.
Kōraku-en sits beside the Oka River and immediately east of Okayama Castle in the city of Okayama, making the pair a common combined destination.
