Königsberg Cathedral

The Königsberg Cathedral is a brick Gothic church on the Kneiphof island in central Kaliningrad, originally constructed in the 14th century. It is an important surviving medieval building in the city and now houses exhibitions and memorials.

The restored cathedral presents a Gothic interior, exhibition spaces detailing local history and a museum area focused on the building and the city. Adjacent to the cathedral is the memorial site for the philosopher Immanuel Kant, whose tomb and commemorative sarcophagus attract many visitors.

The cathedral complex is also known for organ music and occasional cultural events held inside the restored nave and chapels. Architectural details include characteristic Baltic brickwork and vaulting which are visible after postwar reconstruction.

Originally built by the Teutonic Order in the 14th century, the cathedral served as the main church of medieval Königsberg and later of the Prussian city. It was severely damaged in World War II and stood as a ruin during the Soviet period before extensive restoration and reconstruction works in the late 20th century.

The cathedral occupies Kneiphof island on the Pregolya River in central Kaliningrad, a short walk from the city centre. It is visible from riverside promenades and streets on both sides of the river.
