Königsberg Castle
Castle Historic Prussian castle site in Kaliningrad, largely demolished
Königsberg Castle’s site in Kaliningrad marks a contentious Prussian landmark of the former city; visitors explore nearby museums and exhibitions about the region’s German and Russian history.
Königsberg Castle was the medieval and later princely castle at the heart of the city historically known as Königsberg, now Kaliningrad in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia. The castle originated as a Teutonic Order stronghold from the medieval period and evolved into a cultural and administrative centre of the city.
The structure was extensively damaged during World War II and subsequently demolished by Soviet authorities in 1968. Its site has since been the subject of archaeological work, commemorative projects and public debate about reconstruction and heritage.
The castle stood on the Pregolya river in the historic centre of Königsberg; the location today is in central Kaliningrad near the old city core.
- Demolition year: Demolished by Soviet authorities in 1968 after heavy damage in World War II, the castle site remains central to Kaliningrad's urban fabric and memory.
