Konak Square

Konak Square is the central public square in the Konak district of İzmir, Turkey, and functions as the city’s administrative and social heart. It is dominated by the historic İzmir Clock Tower, an emblematic landmark completed in 1901.

The square’s primary attraction is the clock tower, which stands about 25 metres tall and serves as a frequent meeting point and photo subject. The area around the square includes the Konak Mosque and the entrance to the historic Kemeraltı market district, giving visitors easy access to shopping and traditional streetscapes.

The clock tower was built at the start of the 20th century during the late Ottoman period and the square evolved around it as İzmir modernized into an urban port and administrative center. The precinct retains a mix of Ottoman and later civic architecture.

Konak Square sits on İzmir’s inner waterfront, close to the ferry terminals and within walking distance of the Aegean shore and the city’s central shopping streets.
