Main image

Kolomoki Mounds is a large prehistoric earthwork complex in southwestern Georgia consisting of multiple mounds arranged around a central plaza. The site is one of the earliest and most significant mound centers in the southeastern United States and is preserved within a state park.

The dominant temple mound (Mound A), the central plaza and several burial mounds, together forming a planned ceremonial landscape. The park includes an on-site museum and boardwalk trails that give access to the mounds and interpret archaeological findings for visitors.

Archaeological research indicates the mounds were constructed by Woodland-period societies during the first millennium CE and were used for ceremonial, civic and mortuary purposes. The site demonstrates complex social organization and regional interaction in the pre-contact Southeast.

Kolomoki Mounds sits in rural Early County, Georgia, within Kolomoki Mounds State Park near the small communities of the region; it is served by local roads and is the primary archaeological attraction in the county.

  • Visitor facilities: An interpretive visitor centre displays recovered artifacts and explains the site's archaeological context to visitors.
  • Date range: The mound complex dates to the Woodland period, built roughly in the first millennium CE and used for ceremonial and burial purposes.
