Kolombangara
Island Volcanic Solomon Island with central rainforest and crater
Volcanic Kolombangara has a near-circular caldera, dense rainforest and hiking trails; divers visit offshore reefs and WWII wrecks, and birdwatchers look for island endemics.
Kolombangara is a nearly circular volcanic island in the Solomon Islands archipelago, notable for its steep, forested slopes and central volcano. The island is dominated by a single volcanic cone and retains extensive native rainforest across its interior.
The island attracts interest for rainforest hiking, birdwatching and scuba diving on its fringing reefs. The shoreline and nearby channels contain a number of Second World War shipwrecks that are popular with divers and are important historical features.
Kolombangara formed as a stratovolcano; its interior remains largely undeveloped and has been used by local communities for subsistence activities. During the Second World War the surrounding waters were the scene of naval actions, leaving wrecks and wartime debris offshore.
It lies in the New Georgia island group of the Solomon Islands, not far from islands such as Gizo and New Georgia. The island is remote from the national capital of Honiara and is reached by inter-island boat services and occasional charter flights to nearby hubs.
- Getting there: Access is typically by boat from nearby islands such as Gizo; overland travel on the island is limited and often requires local guides.
- Environment and settlement: The island's interior is protected rainforest with endemic species and small coastal villages; there are no large towns or urban infrastructure.
What to See #
- Mount Veve (central volcano): The island's central peak is a near-conical stratovolcano and highest point on the island; the interior is largely forested and steeply sloping with few roads.
- Reefs and wrecks: Coastal reefs and wartime shipwrecks surround the shorelines, making the waters of interest for diving and marine history, especially from the Second World War period.
How to Get to Kolombangara #
Main hub: Honiara (Honiara International Airport) on Guadalcanal is the Solomon Islands’ main air gateway. From Honiara, travel to outer islands, including Kolombangara, is by inter-island boat charter or scheduled passenger boats run by local operators.
Local note: Island-to-island schedules and charter availability vary; arrange transfers locally in Honiara (or via the regional centres of Munda/Gizo) with boat operators or tour companies.
Tips for Visiting Kolombangara #
- Access Kolombangara by boat from Gizo or Munda-public transfer schedules are limited, so confirm timings or arrange a private charter in advance.
- The interior is largely rainforest and lightly developed; hire a local guide to reach the island's interior trails, crater‑rim viewpoints such as Mount Veve, and village homestays rather than attempting unguided routes.
- If you plan wreck or reef diving around Kolombangara, stage trips from Gizo or Munda with operators experienced in Solomon Islands WWII sites and local permitting.
Best Time to Visit Kolombangara #
Kolombangara is best visited in the dry season (May-October) for drier weather and more reliable conditions for outdoor activities.
