Kolmanskop
Ruins Abandoned diamond mining town slowly reclaimed by desert
An abandoned diamond‑mining town near Lüderitz, Kolmanskop features sand‑filled houses and a small museum; photographers and history visitors tour the ghost town to study early 20th‑century mining architecture.
Kolmanskop is an early 20th-century diamond mining settlement in the Namib Desert, in the ǁKaras Region of southern Namibia, now preserved as a ghost town. It became a symbol of the diamond rush era and is frequently photographed for its sand-filled interiors and ruined colonial-era buildings.
Main attractions are the partially buried houses, a former dance hall and municipal buildings whose rooms are intruded by drifting sand, and the visible remains of mine infrastructure. The compact site offers a clear experience of a once-thriving company town with many buildings accessible on guided walks.
The town grew rapidly after a diamond discovery in the early 1900s and was developed by German colonial authorities and private companies. Production declined after richer finds were made elsewhere, and Kolmanskop was largely abandoned by the mid-20th century; it has since become a protected heritage site and tourist destination.

How to Get to Kolmanskop #
Kolmanskop lies a short distance inland from the coastal town of Lüderitz. The usual approach is to base yourself in Lüderitz and drive (or take a guided tour) roughly 10 km on the local gravel road that leads to the Kolmanskop site; there is a small parking area and a short walk of a few hundred metres from the parking to the buildings. There is no regular public bus directly to the ruins, so visitors normally use a rental car or an organized tour from Lüderitz.
Tips for Visiting Kolmanskop #
- Aim for sunrise or late afternoon for the best light inside the sand-filled houses and to avoid midday heat; the soft side-lighting makes interior shots far more striking than high noon.
- Visit Kolmanskop from Lüderitz on an organised tour or via the authorised entrance in town-guided visits include the required ticket/entry and background on the site's diamond-era history, and avoid attempting to explore off-limits areas alone.
- Give priority to a tour operator based in Lüderitz and plan accommodation there; Kolmanskop is remote, parking at the site is limited, and staying in town makes timing early/late visits far easier.
