How to Get to Koli National Park #
Koli National Park is in North Karelia; the park’s visitor areas (Kolin kansallispuisto / Ukko-Koli) are reached by road from nearby towns. By car it’s roughly 70-90 km from Joensuu (about 1-1.5 hours) and a longer drive from larger cities such as Kuopio.
Regional bus services run from Joensuu and other regional centres to the Koli area (village/visitor centre), with short walks or local transport to the main viewpoints and trails. Driving gives the most direct access to trailheads and parking.
Tips for Visiting Koli National Park #
- Plan to be at the Ukko‑Koli viewpoint at sunrise or sunset for the famous panoramas over Lake Pielinen; those times also give the best light and thinner crowds.
- Use the main Ukko‑Koli parking/trailhead as your starting point for the short summit trails-this is the most direct access to the iconic viewpoints that many visitors come for.
- If you prefer solitude, head to lesser-known viewpoints and longer lake-level trails (rather than the summit path) or visit on weekdays outside the brief summer high season.
