Kokura Castle

Kokura Castle stands in the Kokura district of Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture and dates back to the early 17th century as a regional feudal stronghold. The present castle keep is a 20th-century reconstruction that functions as a museum and public park focal point.

Visitors see a multi-story reconstructed keep with exhibition rooms, the restored Honmaru residence and landscaped castle grounds including stone walls and a moat. Seasonal events and cherry blossoms in spring are common attractions in the park surrounding the castle.

The original castle complex was established in the early Edo period for a ruling samurai family and passed through different domains over subsequent centuries; the historic buildings suffered damage and parts were rebuilt in the modern era.

The castle sits in central Kokura, within Kitakyushu city, a short distance from JR Kokura Station and the urban core; the site is integrated into an urban park and cultural precinct.
