How to Get to Kokshetau#

Kokshetau is served by a small regional airport close to the city and by regular rail and coach connections to Nur-Sultan (Astana) and other northern Kazakh cities. The railway station and central bus station are the main gateways for overland arrivals; for short trips within town taxis or marshrutkas are quickest.

By Air

Kokshetau Airport (no IATA code): Kokshetau’s small regional airport sits a short drive from the city centre. From the terminal you can take a local taxi or an airport shuttle/minibus when available - taxis typically cost around 1,200-2,500 KZT and take about 15-25 minutes to reach central Kokshetau.

Nursultan (Astana) - Nursultan Nazarbayev International Airport (TSE): If you arrive at Astana, you have reliable onward options to Kokshetau. From the airport to Astana city centre a taxi or airport bus will take 20-40 minutes (taxi ~2,000-3,500 KZT); from Astana you can catch intercity trains or buses to Kokshetau (see Train & Bus card) - journey time by road is roughly 3.5-4.5 hours and by rail roughly 3-4 hours, with intercity fares typically in the low thousands of KZT.

By Train & Bus

Train: Kokshetau is served by Kokshetau railway station (operated by Kazakhstan Temir Zholy). Regional and intercity trains link Kokshetau with Nur-Sultan (Astana), Petropavl and other northern Kazakh cities; expect travel times to Nur-Sultan of around 3-4 hours and fares generally in the range of ~1,500-4,000 KZT depending on class and service.

Bus / Marshrutka: The Kokshetau central bus station handles frequent minibuses (marshrutkas) and coach services to nearby towns and to Nur-Sultan. Intercity coaches to Astana take about 3.5-4.5 hours with fares commonly between ~1,500 and 3,000 KZT; local city buses and marshrutkas run short routes inside the region with single fares typically ~80-200 KZT.

How to Get Around Kokshetau#

Kokshetau is best explored by a mix of walking for the compact central areas and short marshrutka or taxi hops for anything farther out. For intercity travel use the railway or coaches to Nur-Sultan and regional towns - they’re reliable and widely used.

  • Intercity train (1,500-4,000 KZT) - Regional and long-distance trains operated by Kazakhstan Temir Zholy connect Kokshetau with Nur-Sultan, Petropavl and other cities. Trains are comfortable for longer journeys and run on a set timetable - expect about 3-4 hours to Nur-Sultan. Buying tickets in advance online or at the station is recommended for preferred seating.
  • Intercity bus / coach (1,500-3,000 KZT) - Coaches and marshrutka services link Kokshetau to Nur-Sultan and nearby towns. Coaches are frequent; travel time to Astana is roughly 3.5-4.5 hours depending on route and traffic. Coaches tend to be the simplest budget option - arrive at the bus station early during holiday periods to secure a seat.
  • Local buses (80-200 KZT) - Kokshetau’s municipal buses cover most neighbourhoods and are the cheapest way to get around. Fares are low (often under 200 KZT) and routes radiate from the city centre and market areas. Buses can be slow and infrequent outside peak hours, so check schedules if you have tight connections.
  • Marshrutka (minibus) (100-250 KZT) - Marshrutkas are shared minibuses that run on set routes and are the fastest way to hop across the city or to nearby villages. They are frequent, cheap and drop you closer to local destinations than larger buses. Expect to pay slightly more than municipal buses but still very affordable; carry small change and be prepared for standing room at busy times.
  • Taxis & ride-hail (Yandex, InDriver) (600-2,500 KZT) - Taxis and app-based services like Yandex.Taxi and InDriver operate in Kokshetau and are convenient for evenings, airport runs or when public transit is slow. Short trips in town commonly cost around 600-1,500 KZT; airport transfers are higher (see By Air card). Always confirm the fare or use the app to avoid surprises.
  • Walking - Kokshetau’s central districts are compact and pleasant for walking - many sights, parks and cafes sit within easy strolling distance. Walking is often the fastest way to navigate the historic centre and lakeside areas; wear comfortable shoes and be ready for seasonally cold winters.
