Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park is a provincial protected area in southeastern British Columbia that conserves alpine terrain, glaciers, lakes and subalpine forests in the Kokanee Range. The park is a focus for backcountry hiking, mountaineering and alpine scenery.

Trails rise from lower-forest campgrounds into glacial cirques and alpine meadows, with Kokanee Lake and the remnant Kokanee Glacier forming focal points for visitors. Recreation is mainly day hikes and overnight backcountry camping rather than developed resort activities.

The park is managed by BC Parks to protect alpine ecosystems and to provide outdoor recreation opportunities; infrastructure is minimal and oriented to backcountry use.

The park lies in the West Kootenay region of British Columbia amid the Selkirk and Kokanee ranges, inland from Kootenay Lake and within driving distance of regional centres in southeastern BC.

  • Visitor preparedness: The park is primarily backcountry and alpine in character; visitors should be prepared for steep trails, variable mountain weather and limited services.

What to See #

  • Kokanee Lake and glacier: Kokanee Lake and the Kokanee Glacier are the park's central alpine features; a well-used trail leads up-valley to a backcountry campsite near the lake and offers views of the glacier and cirque walls.
