Main image

Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area on the Kodiak Archipelago in Alaska managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to conserve island habitats and wildlife, including brown bears and seabirds.

Recreation focuses on wildlife viewing, guided and self-guided backcountry visits, fishing and hunting under refuge regulations, and coastal boat access for viewing seabird colonies and marine mammals. Access is by boat or aircraft and facilities are minimal, so visits are generally planned and self-sufficient.

The refuge was established to protect critical habitat in the Kodiak Archipelago and has been managed to conserve populations of large mammals, seabirds and anadromous fish while allowing regulated public use.

The refuge covers much of the Kodiak Archipelago off the southern coast of mainland Alaska and includes a mix of islands, coastal habitats and marine areas accessible from Kodiak Island and nearby communities.

  • Management: Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a protected area to conserve habitat for large mammals, seabirds and anadromous fish.
  • When to go: Best wildlife viewing is seasonal, with spring and summer offering the most visible bird and marine mammal activity.
