Kōdai-ji Temple

Kōdai-ji is a prominent Zen temple in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, founded in the early 17th century by Nene (also known as Kōdai-in) in memory of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It is noted for its temple buildings and a landscaped garden ensemble.

Key features include the temple’s main worship hall, tea houses and a carefully designed garden with ponds and walking paths, historically attributed to early 17th-century landscapers. The gardens and architecture are both important reasons people visit, especially during the autumn maple season.

The temple was established in the first decades of the 1600s as a memorial temple and developed under patronage associated with the Toyotomi legacy; many of the surviving structures and garden layouts date from that early Edo-period foundation.

Kōdai-ji sits on the eastern hills of Kyoto’s historical centre in Higashiyama, within walking distance of other major temple sites in the area. The complex is accessible by local buses and on foot from central Higashiyama neighbourhoods.
