Kodachrome Basin State Park is a Utah state park known for its concentrated collection of colorful sandstone spires and unusual sedimentary landforms in a small basin. The park is located in south-central Utah and is notable for its geology and scenic desert landscapes.

The basin contains dozens of vertical sandstone ‘pipes’ and spires set within sandstone and conglomerate deposits, which are viewed from hiking trails and a loop road. Visitors use the park for hiking, photography and camping, with several established trails that traverse viewpoints and the basin floor.

The formations result from erosion and differential cementation of sedimentary units. The name ‘Kodachrome’ was applied in the mid-20th century in recognition of the vivid colors of the rocks; the area was later designated as a Utah state park.

The park lies near the small town of Cannonville and is east of Bryce Canyon National Park in southern Utah, accessed via state and county roads from nearby communities in Garfield County.

  • 67 sandstone spires: About 67 prominent sandstone spires rise from the basin floor and are the park's most distinctive geological feature; they are visible from trails and the main scenic drive.
  • Trails and camping: The park includes a network of short hiking trails, picnic areas and a campground with sites suitable for tents and RVs; early morning and late afternoon light emphasize the colors of the rock.

What to See #

  • Sand pipes: A concentration of approximately 67 monolithic sandstone spires and 'sand pipes' that rise from the basin floor and are the park's defining geological feature.
