Main image

Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete and the principal center of the Minoan civilization, located near Heraklion. The palatial complex dates mainly from the Middle to Late Bronze Age, roughly 1900 to 1400 BCE, and is associated in later tradition with King Minos and the labyrinth myth.

Visitors can walk through the remains of the central palace complex, see the so-called throne room, and view restored fresco fragments that illustrate Minoan religious and courtly life. The site plan shows multi-storey architecture, storage magazines and ceremonial courts that indicate a palace functioning as an administrative and ritual center.

Excavations began systematically in the early 20th century under Sir Arthur Evans, who carried out extensive clearing and partial reconstruction; many visible restorations date from that work. Knossos is immediately adjacent to modern Heraklion and has been a major archaeological attraction since its excavation.

The site sits on a low hill about 5 km south of Heraklion port city on Crete, making it easily accessible by road from the regional capital.

  • Proximity to Heraklion: The site lies about 5 kilometers south of Heraklion city center and is commonly visited as a half-day excursion from Heraklion.
  • Excavation history: Excavations and restorations were led by Sir Arthur Evans from 1900 onward and include modern reconstruction efforts that are visible on-site.

What to See #

  • Palace of Knossos: The central Minoan palace complex with multi-storey buildings, ceremonial courts and storage magazines that formed the administrative heart of Bronze Age Knossos.
  • Throne Room: An inner ceremonial area traditionally called the throne room, containing a stone 'throne' and benches used for ritual or administrative functions in the palace.
  • Frescoes and West Court: Areas preserved and displayed with vibrant fresco fragments, including scenes of bulls and ritual processions recovered during early 20th century excavations.

How to Get to Knossos #

The Bronze Age palace of Knossos lies just outside Heraklion on Crete, about 5 km southeast of Heraklion city centre. From Heraklion’s central bus station there are frequent local buses to the Knossos site (short ride) and taxis are widely available; driving from Heraklion downtown takes around 10-15 minutes.

The archaeological site is a short walk from the bus stop/parking area.

Tips for Visiting Knossos #

  • Get to Knossos as soon as it opens to see the palace with far fewer tour groups and before heat and light wash out the fresco colors - early morning is also less crowded for photography.
  • Combine the Knossos visit with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum the same day: many of the palace's original frescoes and artifacts are housed there and seeing them after the site deepens understanding.
  • Enter through the site's main visitor center/entrance on the road from Heraklion and follow the suggested one-way route to grasp the palace's plan; most guided tours follow the same route so doing this early lets you linger in quieter corners.
  • If you prefer fewer people and cooler temperatures, plan Knossos for late afternoon in shoulder seasons - many organized tours stick to mid-morning.
