Knidos is an ancient Greek city-site on the Datça peninsula in Muğla Province, southwestern Turkey, known for its dramatic coastal location and well-preserved ruins. The city was notable in antiquity for its maritime position and for artistic and scientific activity.
Prominent remains include two natural harbours, a theatre, agora, and temple precincts on promontories overlooking the sea; the city was famed in antiquity for housing the celebrated statue of Aphrodite by Praxiteles. The coastal ruins are set among low hills and cliffed promontories that preserve the plan of the ancient settlement.
Knidos was founded in the Classical era and flourished during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, serving as a regional trading and cultural centre. Over time the city declined and was eventually abandoned, leaving the visible archaeological remains visitors see today.
The site sits at the western tip of the Datça peninsula, near the modern village and small harbour communities, on the southwest coast of Anatolia. It is accessible by road from nearby coastal towns and views focus on the harbour basins and headland ruins.
- Maritime location: The city occupied the tip of the Datça peninsula and sat at the meeting point of Aegean and eastern Mediterranean sea routes, giving it strategic maritime importance in antiquity.
What to See #
- Double harbours: Twin harbours on the cape - a natural pair of sheltered bays that served as separate commercial and naval anchorages in antiquity.
- Urban ruins and theatre: Ruined civic and religious structures including the theatre, agora and temple platforms that date primarily to the Classical and Hellenistic periods.
