Klazomenai was an ancient Ionian Greek city on the coast of what is now İzmir Province in western Turkey, situated near the modern town of Urla. The site was occupied from the Archaic through the Roman and Byzantine periods and is known from ancient sources and archaeology.
Excavations have revealed defensive works, grave sites and evidence of maritime trade and local industry. The city is also noted in scholarship for its role within the network of Ionian Greek settlements on the Aegean coast.
Over time Klazomenai experienced the same shifts as other Ionian cities: it came under Persian, then Hellenistic and later Roman influence while remaining an active coastal settlement into late antiquity.
The ruins lie on the southern shore of the Gulf of İzmir near Urla, west of the city of İzmir and accessible by road from the provincial capital.
