Kjerag is a granite mountain in Rogaland county, Norway, rising above Lysefjord and known for its steep cliffs and dramatic fjord views. The site is especially famous for the wedged boulder known as Kjeragbolten that sits in a crevice on the mountain face.

The mountain plateau sits at roughly 1,000 meters above sea level and offers hiking routes that lead to lookouts over Lysefjord and the boulder itself. The area is popular with hikers in summer and with BASE jumpers from late spring through early autumn when conditions permit.

Kjerag formed by glacial and geological processes that left polished granite cliffs and deep fjord valleys. Over time the site became a recreational destination and a well known photographic location because of the boulder and the height of the cliffs.

Kjerag overlooks Lysefjord in southwestern Norway, within Ryfylke district of Rogaland. The closest larger town with tourist services is Stavanger, and access is usually via roads and mountain trails from fjord-side roads.

  • Height and activities: The plateau overlooks Lysefjord at approximately 1,000 meters of elevation, creating vertical drops suitable for BASE jumping and dramatic views.
  • Hiking conditions: The main hiking route is unpaved and exposed in places; good footwear and favorable weather are important for safety.

Tips for Visiting Kjerag #
