Kizhi Pogost
Historical Site Island wooden church complex notable for multi-tiered domes
Kizhi Island’s wooden architecture includes the 22-domed Transfiguration Church and an open-air museum of 18th-century carpentry; visitors arrive by ferry or boat across Lake Onega.
Kizhi Pogost is a wooden church ensemble and open-air museum on Kizhi Island in Lake Onega, Republic of Karelia, Russia, centred on two large timber churches and a bell tower. The site is internationally recognised for its traditional wooden architecture and carpentry techniques.
The site’s principal monuments are the 22-domed Transfiguration Church and the 9-domed Intercession Church, together with a high wooden bell tower, all set inside a fenced churchyard. The island also preserves a wider collection of vernacular wooden buildings showing rural northern Russian architecture and construction methods.
The churches date from the 18th century and were built using complex timber joinery. During the 20th century Kizhi was developed as an open-air museum with conservation work to stabilise and exhibit the structures.
Kizhi Island lies in Lake Onega and is reached by seasonal boat services from Petrozavodsk, the regional administrative centre located to the south of the island.
- Outstanding wooden carpentry: The ensemble is notable for large multi-domed wooden churches built using interlocking timber joinery rather than metal nails.
- Seasonal access by boat: Access is seasonal; scheduled boats and tours operate from Petrozavodsk during the ice-free months.
What to See #
- Transfiguration Church (22 domes): A 22-domed timber church constructed in traditional carpentry without nails; it is the most visually dominant structure on the island.
- Intercession Church (9 domes): A 9-domed wooden church built in an 18th century style and located near the Transfiguration Church within the enclosed churchyard.
- Bell tower and enclosed pogost: A large traditional wooden bell tower that, with the two churches, forms the enclosed pogost or churchyard complex.
- Kizhi open-air museum: An open-air museum on Kizhi Island that conserves additional rural wooden buildings and demonstrates traditional carpentry and village architecture.
How to Get to Kizhi Pogost #
Kizhi is accessed by ferry or hydrofoil from Petrozavodsk (Sennaya embankment) in summer; the trip by hydrofoil takes about 1.5-2.5 hours depending on vessel type. Some private tour operators run day trips during the May-September season.
Tips for Visiting Kizhi Pogost #
- Take an early boat from Sennaya or Petrozavodsk to avoid afternoon winds and tour-bus crowds on the island.
- Bring a windproof layer - Lake Onega's breezes can be sharp even on sunny days, and wooden churches radiate cold in the shade.
- Look for the tiny dovetail joints and wooden pegs on the Church of the Transfiguration; these carpentry details are what UNESCO recognized.
Best Time to Visit Kizhi Pogost #
Kizhi is best visited in the short summer season when the ferries operate and wooden structures are accessible.
