Kiyomizu-dera
Temple Historic Kyoto temple with famous wooden stage
Kiyomizu‑dera perches on Kyoto’s Higashiyama hillside with a wooden stage offering city views; visitors follow temple approaches, drink from the Otowa waterfall and walk historic streets below.
Kiyomizu-dera is a Buddhist temple on the eastern hills of Kyoto, founded in 778 and famous for its large wooden stage projecting from the main hall. The temple is a major cultural site and a popular viewpoint over Kyoto.
The complex includes the main hall with its 13-metre projecting veranda, the Otowa Waterfall whose streams are associated with different blessings, and subsidiary shrines like Jishu Shrine for matchmaking. The wooden stage is supported without nails and provides wide views across the city and surrounding slopes.
The temple originated in the late 8th century and has been rebuilt several times; the present main hall and stage date largely from the early 17th century, when they were reconstructed under the Tokugawa shogunate. Kiyomizu-dera has long been an important pilgrimage and sightseeing site in Kyoto.
Kiyomizu-dera sits on the eastern hills (Higashiyama) of Kyoto, about 2.5 km east of Kyoto Station and within walking distance of other historic sites along the Higashiyama district. The approach involves uphill paths through hillside streets and temple grounds.
- Best time to visit: The wooden stage is especially popular for views during spring cherry blossom season and autumn foliage - aim for early morning to avoid crowds.
- Practical tip: Access involves uphill walking from the nearest public transit; comfortable shoes are recommended for the approach through the precincts.
What to See #
- Main Hall and Veranda: Large wooden main hall with a projecting veranda supported by timbers, forming a viewing platform approximately 13 metres above the hillside; offers views across Kyoto city.
- Otowa Waterfall: Sacred waterfall where three streams flow into a single pool; visitors may drink from the streams for wishes related to longevity, success and love.
- Jishu Shrine: Small shrine dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking within the temple complex, visited separately from the main hall.
How to Get to Kiyomizu-dera #
Kiyomizu-dera (Higashiyama, Kyoto) is best reached from Kyoto Station by Kyoto City Bus (routes such as the 100 or 206) to the Gojo-zaka or Kiyomizu-michi stops, then a 10-15 minute uphill walk along Sannen-zaka/Ninen-zaka to the temple. From the Gion/Higashiyama area it is a 15-25 minute walk. By car it is a short drive from central Kyoto (traffic and narrow hill streets can add time).
Tips for Visiting Kiyomizu-dera #
- Arrive very early (shortly after opening) and approach via the preserved Ninenzaka/Sannenzaka streets to enjoy the approach and avoid the mid-morning tourist buses that flood the temple plaza.
- Make time to visit the Otowa Waterfall and the adjacent Jishu Shrine (the love-wishing shrine); these quieter spots within the complex are commonly missed by visitors focused only on the wooden stage.
- Check whether Kiyomizu-dera is running evening illuminations (seasonal in spring and autumn) and plan accordingly-night openings draw large crowds, so book early or visit the first hour of the session.
Best Time to Visit Kiyomizu-dera #
Best in spring for cherry blossoms and autumn for colorful foliage; both seasons attract large numbers of visitors, especially at peak bloom/leaf times.
