Main image

Kitselas Canyon is a narrow, rocky canyon on the Skeena River in northwestern British Columbia, within the traditional territory of the Kitselas First Nation. The canyon is noted for steep rock walls and strong river currents where the Skeena is constricted.

The canyon offers dramatic river scenery, steep cliffs and rapids where the river narrows. Road and rail corridors follow the river through the canyon, so most public viewing is from roadside pullouts or short stops rather than long developed trails.

The area has long been used by the Kitselas (Gitxsan) people for fishing and travel along the river; it later became an important corridor for steamboats, roads and rail as European and Canadian transportation networks developed. Archaeological and cultural sites associated with local First Nations are part of the canyon’s significance.

Kitselas Canyon sits on the Skeena River in northwestern British Columbia, near the community and reserve lands of the Kitselas First Nation and accessible from Highway 16. The nearest larger service centre is the town of Terrace in the Skeena region.

  • Access: Located along the Skeena River corridor, visible from Highway 16 and the nearby rail line with roadside pullouts and viewpoints for short stops.
  • Cultural importance: Within the traditional territory of the Kitselas First Nation and long valued for salmon fishing and river travel.
