Kitano Tenmangū was established to placate the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane and has been the site of religious ceremonies and community gatherings for over a millennium. Structures within the precinct have been rebuilt and repaired at various times but the shrine remains an active center for worship and cultural events.
The shrine is located in northwest Kyoto city, in the Kitano area, and is accessible by public transport from central Kyoto.

Kitano Tenmangū is in northern-central Kyoto. From Kyoto Station take the Karasuma subway line to Karasuma-Oike and transfer to a local bus (several lines serve the shrine, including numbers 50/101/102 depending on routing), or take a taxi (about 15-25 minutes depending on traffic). It’s also walkable from Nijo Castle (about 20-30 minutes).
