Kiska is an island in the Aleutian chain of Alaska and is administered as part of the U.S. state of Alaska. The island is noted for its role in the World War II Aleutian Campaign and its remnant military wreckage.

During World War II, Kiska was occupied by Japanese forces in 1942 and later the site of Allied operations to retake the island in 1943; much 20th-century military equipment and wreckage remain. The island has had no permanent civilian population since the war and is largely visited for historical interest and natural study.

Kiska lies in the western Aleutian Islands of Alaska, separated from the Alaska mainland by hundreds of kilometres of ocean and forming part of the island chain that extends toward the North Pacific.

  • WWII remains: Remains of World War II fortifications and shipwrecks are present and visible in places, attracting interest from historians and divers.

How to Get to Kiska #

Kiska Island is a remote Aleutian island with no regular commercial transport. It is reached only by private boat or charter/expedition vessels and occasional special-purpose flights; most visits are part of organised expedition cruises or military logistics. If you plan a visit you must arrange sea or air transport and permits in advance-there are no public ferries or scheduled passenger flights to the island.

Tips for Visiting Kiska #

  • Kiska is extremely remote and accessible only by charter vessel or as part of an organized expedition from Dutch Harbor/Adak - do not attempt independently; book with an experienced Aleutian operator.
  • Plan your trip for the short summer window (July-August) when seas and weather are most likely to allow landings; expect plans to change because of weather and sea state.
  • Visit with a guide familiar with the island's WWII sites and safety issues; guided landings help locate the historic wreckage and remnants while minimizing environmental impact and safety risks.

Best Time to Visit Kiska #

Visit in summer (June-August) when weather and sea conditions are most favorable for reaching and exploring the island.

Summer (best time for access)
June-August · 5-12°C
Milder temperatures and relatively calmer seas make boat access and on-island exploration most feasible.
Shoulder seasons (variable, often rough)
April-May, September-October · 0-8°C
Weather is cool and can be windy with frequent fog or rough seas that complicate travel to the island.
Winter (harsh)
