Kiska
Island Aleutian island, World War II battle site
An Aleutian island with significant World War II history and large seabird colonies; accessed by expedition boat or plane, visited for military relics and wildlife.
Kiska is an island in the Aleutian chain of Alaska and is administered as part of the U.S. state of Alaska. The island is noted for its role in the World War II Aleutian Campaign and its remnant military wreckage.
During World War II, Kiska was occupied by Japanese forces in 1942 and later the site of Allied operations to retake the island in 1943; much 20th-century military equipment and wreckage remain. The island has had no permanent civilian population since the war and is largely visited for historical interest and natural study.
Kiska lies in the western Aleutian Islands of Alaska, separated from the Alaska mainland by hundreds of kilometres of ocean and forming part of the island chain that extends toward the North Pacific.
- WWII remains: Remains of World War II fortifications and shipwrecks are present and visible in places, attracting interest from historians and divers.
