Kirunavaara
Mountain Iron-rich mountain site hosting Sweden's major ore mine
An iron-ore mountain beside Kiruna, Kirunavaara marks decades of mining activity and steep trails. Travelers visit for mining history, Arctic landscapes and access to northern lights and midnight sun experiences.
Kirunavaara is an iron ore-bearing mountain adjacent to the town of Kiruna in northern Sweden, and the site of the Kiruna mine. The mountain and mine are central to Sweden’s iron ore industry and have been mined on a large scale for well over a century.
The primary feature is the underground iron ore mine operated by LKAB, one of the world’s larger iron ore producers. The mine’s footprint and expansion have shaped local industry and infrastructure rather than serving as a conventional scenic landmark.
Commercial extraction at Kirunavaara expanded from the late 19th and early 20th centuries as rail connections and industrial demand grew, and operations continue under LKAB. The mine’s activity has prompted long-term urban changes in nearby Kiruna, including relocation of some town areas due to ground subsidence.
Kirunavaara is immediately adjacent to Kiruna town in Norrbotten County, within Swedish Lapland above the Arctic Circle; the site is remote relative to southern Sweden but linked by road and the Malmbanan railway to regional hubs.
- Visitor access: Viewing of active mining areas is restricted; guided tours and visitor centres provide safe observation of mining history and techniques.
What to See #
- Kiruna mine: The Kiruna iron ore mine - a large underground mining operation producing a high proportion of Sweden's iron ore, operated by LKAB.
