Kiruna Church

Kiruna Church is the principal church building in the town of Kiruna in Sweden’s far north, noted for its wooden construction and distinctive tall nave. The church was designed by architect Gustaf Wickman and completed in the early 20th century.

Construction took place in the years leading up to and including 1912, and the building is often cited as one of Sweden’s larger wood-built churches with a capacity for several hundred worshippers. Its interior includes carved wooden details and an architectural style that blends national romantic and ecclesiastical influences.

Built to serve the then-new mining town of Kiruna, the church has been central to the town’s religious and civic life since its opening. In recent decades the wider town has been subject to a planned relocation due to mining-related ground subsidence; the church has been a focus of conservation planning during these changes.

The church sits on elevated ground within Kiruna town in Norrbotten County, northern Sweden, and is within walking distance of the town center and public squares.
