Kirkjufellsfossar

Kirkjufellsfossar is a small series of waterfalls on the Snæfellsnes peninsula in Iceland’s Western Region, located close to the town of Grundarfjörður. The falls are commonly photographed with the nearby conical mountain Kirkjufell rising behind them.

The site comprises a set of three cascading drops that sit directly in front of the 463-metre Kirkjufell, creating the well-known triangular composition used in many landscape photographs. Short paths and a small parking area provide easy access to multiple viewing points on both banks of the stream.

The falls are natural features without a constructed history; they have become a popular photography and sightseeing spot in recent decades as visitor numbers to Snæfellsnes increased. There is no notable built heritage on site.

Geographically the falls sit on the north coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula near Grundarfjörður, in western Iceland. The location is on regional roads serving the peninsula and is roughly a two- to three-hour drive northwest from Reykjavík.

• Best time to visit: Sunset and night during clear winter months produce strong colours and are popular times for photography, and the site is also frequented for northern lights photography.
• Practical tip: A small public parking area and short walking paths give easy access; the principal viewpoint aligns the three cascades with the mountain for a single-frame composition.
