The Kirche am Steinhof, often called the Otto Wagner Church, is a landmark Art Nouveau church in Vienna’s 14th district, built as part of the Steinhof psychiatric hospital complex. It is widely regarded as one of Otto Wagner’s principal ecclesiastical works.
The church features a compact centralized plan, gilded interior details, mosaics and a distinctive dome and façade executed in Jugendstil style; visitors come to study its architecture and decorative program. The building is also appreciated for its integration with the hospital grounds and for views over the Wienerwald from the site.
Designed by Otto Wagner and constructed in the first decade of the 20th century, the church served patients and staff of the Steinhof psychiatric hospital and exemplifies the era’s public-architecture ideals. Its decorative program and fittings date from the original construction period and have been preserved and restored.
The church stands on the Steinhof grounds in Vienna’s western suburbs, in the municipality of Penzing near green parkland and the Wienerwald.
