Kinmen National Park
National Park Coastal Taiwanese park preserving offshore island ecosystems
Off Fujian’s coast, Kinmen National Park protects fortified villages, coastal batteries and traditional Minnan architecture; visitors tour military museums, tunnels and sample local peanuts and oyster snacks.
Kinmen National Park is a protected area covering parts of the Kinmen (Quemoy) islands off the coast of mainland China and administered by Taiwan. The park was set up in the 1990s to protect both natural wetlands and the islands’ military and cultural heritage.
The park contains coastal wetlands, beaches, and a network of historic forts, artillery positions, and traditional villages that draw visitors interested in military history and birdwatching. Trails and low-impact roads link observation points and museum sites around the main island.
Much of the park conserves habitats altered by decades of military use, including salt marshes and coastal scrub that support resident and migratory birds. Several restored forts and batteries are interpreted for visitors and are focal points for guided walks.
The park sits on the islands of Kinmen County in the Taiwan Strait, immediately off the mainland Chinese city of Xiamen. Access is by ferry or small aircraft from Taiwan, with facilities concentrated on the larger Kinmen islands.
- Viewing points: Good viewpoints for coastal wetlands and old fortifications are along the north and east coasts of Greater Kinmen island, where walking trails and observation points are easiest to reach from town.
- When to go: Best times to visit are outside the hot, humid summer months; spring and autumn give cooler weather for walks and outdoor interpretation.
