Kings Canyon National Park
Park Rugged Sierra park protecting deep canyons and sequoias
Kings Canyon offers deep glacial valleys, high Sierra trails and groves of giant sequoias in Grant Grove; activities include backcountry hiking, scenic drives and waterfall viewing in a less-crowded high-country setting.
Kings Canyon National Park in California was established in 1940 and protects a glacially carved canyon and extensive Sierra Nevada high country. It is administered together with Sequoia National Park by the National Park Service.
The park features steep granite canyon walls, river corridors, and groves of giant sequoias. Popular destinations include the sequoia stands in Grant Grove and scenic corridors accessed from Cedar Grove; there are numerous hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty. Road access into the deeper canyon is seasonal, with most visitors arriving by the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway in summer and fall.
Conservation and recreational infrastructure were developed through the 20th century as the area was protected and roaded access added. Designations and joint administration with Sequoia National Park have shaped management of wilderness, sequoia groves, and recreation.
The park sits on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada in central California, roughly east of Fresno. The terrain ranges from deep river valleys to high mountain country; nearest major city services are in Fresno and Visalia, with smaller gateway towns along highway corridors.
- Access: Much of the park is managed jointly with Sequoia National Park by the National Park Service; some roads and high-elevation areas are seasonally closed in winter.
What to See #
- Grant Grove: Located in the western Sierra Nevada, this area includes **Grant Grove**, home to large giant sequoias including the General Grant Tree, one of the park's most visited sequoia groves.
- Kings Canyon (the canyon): A deep, glacially carved valley following the Kings River with steep granite walls and river corridor viewpoints; access is concentrated along the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway and trails from Cedar Grove.
- Cedar Grove: A lower-elevation valley and campground area with trailheads that provide access to the canyon floor, river, and backcountry routes into the high country.
How to Get to Kings Canyon National Park #
Kings Canyon National Park is reached primarily by car. The main park roads are accessed from CA‑180 east out of the San Joaquin Valley (Fresno area) into the park’s canyon and Grant Grove areas; the park is remote and most visitors drive in from Fresno and surrounding Central Valley communities. Services and public transit inside the park are limited, so private vehicle is the usual choice.
Tips for Visiting Kings Canyon National Park #
- Plan visits in late spring to early summer if you want waterfalls and wildflowers; be aware that some canyon roads and trailheads remain snow-affected into spring.
- Use the Grant Grove area (Grant Grove Village) to access the Giant Sequoia groves and the main visitor services; Cedar Grove and the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway offer deeper canyon views but are seasonally closed or restricted in winter-check road status before you go.
- Rather than just driving the main road, take shorter hikes such as Zumwalt Meadow or lookout points along the Scenic Byway-these quieter stops reveal the canyon floor and river views that many visitors miss.
Best Time to Visit Kings Canyon National Park #
Visit in summer for full access to high-country roads and trails; shoulder seasons offer fewer crowds but variable conditions depending on elevation.
