Kilmainham Gaol
Museum Former Dublin prison now a history museum
A decommissioned prison in Dublin turned museum, Kilmainham Gaol interprets Ireland’s 19th- and early 20th-century political history through cell blocks, executions and independence-era exhibits.
Kilmainham Gaol is a former prison in Dublin, Ireland, built in 1796 and later used as a central detention site for criminal and political prisoners. It is a nationally important museum for Irish modern history and the 1916 Easter Rising.
Guided tours take visitors through the radial cell wings, the governor’s office and the stonebreaker’s yard where several political executions took place; tours focus on the prison layout and stories of inmates. Many of the original iron cell doors, narrow single cells and communal yards remain on display and are explained on the route.
Constructed in 1796 as a county jail, the prison remained in operation into the early 20th century and held many ordinary criminals and political prisoners, including leaders of the 1916 Rising. The building was later decommissioned, restored and opened as a museum to present its role in Ireland’s social and political history.
The gaol sits just west of Dublin city centre near the River Liffey and Heuston station, within the Kilmainham area of Dublin.
- Tours: Advance booking is strongly recommended because public access is by timed guided tour only and tours can sell out, especially on weekends.
