Killarney National Park is a protected landscape in County Kerry, Ireland, that combines lakes, woodland and mountain terrain and was established as Ireland’s first national park in 1932. The park is centered on the Lakes of Killarney and is an important area for native woodland conservation and scenic tourism.
Broad lake vistas, native oak and yew woodlands, mountain backdrops and a range of built heritage such as traditional houses and castles set beside the water. Popular activities include walking, guided tours and boat trips on the lakes during the tourist season.
The park was created to protect remaining native woodland and outstanding scenic landscapes and has been managed since the early 20th century to conserve habitats, cultural sites and recreational opportunities. Management includes visitor facilities clustered around the main entrances and estates within the park.
Killarney National Park lies adjacent to the town of Killarney in southwest Ireland; the town functions as the primary base for visitors and is a short drive from the principal park entrances and visitor centres.
