Main image

Killarney National Park is a protected landscape in County Kerry, Ireland, that combines lakes, woodland and mountain terrain and was established as Ireland’s first national park in 1932. The park is centered on the Lakes of Killarney and is an important area for native woodland conservation and scenic tourism.

Broad lake vistas, native oak and yew woodlands, mountain backdrops and a range of built heritage such as traditional houses and castles set beside the water. Popular activities include walking, guided tours and boat trips on the lakes during the tourist season.

The park was created to protect remaining native woodland and outstanding scenic landscapes and has been managed since the early 20th century to conserve habitats, cultural sites and recreational opportunities. Management includes visitor facilities clustered around the main entrances and estates within the park.

Killarney National Park lies adjacent to the town of Killarney in southwest Ireland; the town functions as the primary base for visitors and is a short drive from the principal park entrances and visitor centres.

  • First Irish national park: Designated Ireland's first national park in 1932, the park protects a mix of lakes, oak woodlands and mountains and is a stronghold for native red deer.
  • Access and activities: Many walking trails and scenic drives radiate from Killarney town, with lake viewpoints and boat trips commonly used to access lakeside features during the tourist season.

What to See #

  • Muckross House: Muckross House and Estate, a 19th-century country house and gardens within the park that function as a museum and visitor centre for the area.
  • Ross Castle: Ross Castle, a 15th-century tower house on the shore of Lough Leane that is a commonly visited historical site and departure point for boat trips on the lakes.
