Kīlauea Caldera
Crater Active volcanic caldera forming Kīlauea's summit
Summit caldera of Kīlauea within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, featuring vents, crater rims and geothermal features; visitors come for crater views, ranger talks and nearby volcanic trails.
The Kīlauea Caldera is the summit depression of Kīlauea, an active shield volcano on the island of Hawaiʻi, and lies within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It includes nested craters such as Halemaʻumaʻu and is one of the most closely observed volcanic summits in the world.
The summit area offers multiple ways to view volcanic landforms - viewpoints along the Crater Rim Drive, rim trails and interpretive stops explain recent activity and volcanic processes. Observers historically saw lava lakes, fumarolic plumes and glow during active periods, with conditions that can change rapidly depending on eruptive behavior.
Kīlauea has been frequently active in modern times, with major summit and rift-zone eruptions recorded throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. A notable episode in 2018 involved a large lower East Rift eruption and summit collapse that reshaped the caldera and drained a long-lived lava lake; subsequent eruptions have continued to alter the summit crater and Halemaʻumaʻu.
The caldera sits on the southeastern side of the Island of Hawaiʻi within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, in the island’s volcanic-summit zone. The nearest major population centers are on the island’s eastern and northern coasts; visitors generally approach via the national park road network and visitor center.
- Summit feature: The caldera contains Halemaʻumaʻu, the summit pit crater that has repeatedly hosted lava lakes and intense volcanic activity in recent decades.
- Visitor safety and access: Access to summit overlooks and trails can be closed with little notice due to volcanic hazards such as lava flows, sulfur dioxide gas and earthquakes; always check Hawaii Volcanoes National Park advisories before visiting.
What to See #
- Halemaʻumaʻu crater: Halemaʻumaʻu crater, a nested crater within the summit caldera that has hosted repeated lava lakes and dramatic summit activity in recent decades.
- Crater Rim Drive: Crater Rim Drive, the main park road that provides multiple overlooks and trailheads around the summit area for viewing the caldera from safe vantage points.
How to Get to Kīlauea Caldera #
From Hilo (about 45-60 minutes), take Highway 11 (Mamalahoa Highway) southwest to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park entrance on Crater Rim Drive. From Kona, follow Highway 11 east (roughly 2-2.5 hours). The park is served by Crater Rim Drive and parking is available at major overlooks; check road conditions on the NPS site.
Tips for Visiting Kīlauea Caldera #
- Arrive before dawn to watch the caldera's light change - cloud inversions and steam plumes are best in the morning.
- Check the National Park Service alerts: crater conditions, road closures, and volcanic hazards change rapidly.
- Bring layers; temperatures at the rim are often 10-15°C cooler than sea level and wind can be relentless.
Best Time to Visit Kīlauea Caldera #
Kīlauea's caldera is accessible year-round but conditions (and what can be seen) depend on volcanic activity and wind - check NPS advisories before going.
